GLYPHOSATE
IUPAC Name: N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine
Physical chemistry:
Appearance: Colourless crystals.
Stability: Glyphosate and all its salts are non-volatile, do not photochemically degrade and are stable in air. Glyphosate is stable to hydrolysis at pH 3, 6 and 9 (5-35 °C).
Biochemistry: Inhibits 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS), an enzyme of the aromatic acid biosynthetic pathway. This prevents synthesis of essential aromatic amino acids needed for protein biosynthesis.
Mode of action: Non-selective systemic herbicide, absorbed by the foliage, with rapid translocation throughout the plant. Inactivated on contact with soil.
Uses: Glyphosate is a nonselective contact herbicide with a broad spectrum of applications in agriculture, horticulture viticulture, forestry orchards, plantation crops, amenities, home gardening and greenhouses for the control of annual and perennial grasses and broadleaves weeds. Furthermore it is used for weed control on aquatic areas, industrial areas, railroad tracks and on other noncultivated areas. Besides the weed control it is used for root sucker control, for reseeding of grassland and to facilitate harvest. In addition there are uses in transgenic crops which are tolerant to glyphosate (rape, maize, soybeans, in sugar and fodder beets, cotton).
