aerogel insulation is made up of a composite material consisting of aerogel embedded within a fiberglass type matrix.
Aerogels can be made hydrophobic (water repelling) and lipophilic (attracting fatty substances). When oil spills occur, Aerogels clean up the oil in a matter of minutes. They function as a sponge that absorbs the oil, not the water. Oil spills cause huge ecologic damage and current cleaning methods are not sustainable (e.g. burning or dispersants).
